Short answer
Yes, in a few live markets, but not yet at scale. Ripple Prime accepts XRP as collateral within its own brokerage, according to crypto.news, and Bitnomial said in November 2025 that institutional clients can post XRP as margin. Wider acceptance would need commodity classification and risk-committee approval.
The full answer
Where is XRP accepted as collateral or margin today?
Ripple Prime is the clearest case. crypto.news reported on July 8, 2026 that Ripple Prime accepts XRP as collateral for margin and settlement within its own brokerage [1]. The same report said Ripple Prime clears more than $3 trillion in trades a year for over 300 institutional clients [1]. In its November 5, 2025 funding announcement, Ripple said Ripple Prime “is now expanding into collateralized lending for XRP” [2]. It describes the company’s intended direction, not a finished product. The page on whether Ripple Prime accepts XRP as collateral covers the details.
Bitnomial, whose exchange and clearinghouse are regulated by the CFTC, said on November 3, 2025 that XRP margin deposits were available for institutional clients trading leveraged perpetuals, futures and options [3]. It added that acceptance is subject to all applicable regulatory approvals, and called the step an extension of its partnership with Ripple [3].
Coinbase International Exchange lets clients use crypto assets besides USDC as collateral for perpetual futures positions. Its help page, checked September 30, 2026, lists XRP among them [4]. A notice on the same page removed a long list of other tokens from eligible collateral from September 29, 2026. XRP, bitcoin and ether are not on that list [4]. Each pledged asset counts at its notional value multiplied by a collateral weight [4].
Crypto lenders take XRP too. Nexo’s XRP borrowing page, undated and checked September 29, 2026, offers a credit line against XRP at up to 30% of the collateral’s value [5]. On the yield side, Bitcoin.com News reported that the MXRPY vault opened to deposits on May 15, 2026 with an initial cap of 500,000 FXRP [6]. One of its strategies uses XRP as collateral through FalconX for options trading on venues such as Deribit [6]. The companies said users remain exposed to counterparty, smart-contract, oracle and infrastructure risks [6]. Flare reported on September 24, 2026 that about 145 million FXRP had been minted, about 130 million of it in DeFi [19]. Flare reported on September 24, 2026 about 145.2 million FXRP minted, with 130 million FXRP in DeFi [19].
A prime broker. Ripple said on November 3, 2025 that “Ripple Prime’s U.S.-based clients can cross-margin OTC spot transactions and holdings with the rest of their digital asset portfolio, including OTC swaps and CME futures and options.”[12]
On September 29, 2026, xrpldashboard showed the LendingProtocol amendment at “15/35 yes (needs 29 of 35; ~42% support)” and SingleAssetVault at 19 of 35; it listed both as “supported by our node but not yet enabled.”[14] Cointurk reported on September 13, 2026 that RippleX’s Jazzi Cooper called XRP collateral a key use case but said such borrowing “has not yet begun through XLS-65 and XLS-66 on mainnet.”[15]
How much XRP is pledged, and can it be measured?
None of these venues has published an XRP collateral balance. Ripple said on November 5, 2025 that client collateral at Ripple Prime had doubled since the acquisition was announced, and that RLUSD was already in use as collateral there [2]. That figure covers all client collateral. crypto.news concluded on July 8, 2026 that the share of Ripple Prime’s activity turning into XRP demand is small enough that no serious estimate puts a meaningful number on it [1]. Its summary was blunt: the collateral is “real but largely internal” [1]. The open problem of sizing this market is covered in how much credit is being created against XRP, and whether it can be measured.
Are banks lending against XRP?
The nearest bank-adjacent case runs through ETF shares. CaptainAltcoin reported on September 10, 2026 that a filing connected to the Schwab Prime Advantage Money Fund reportedly lists shares of several XRP ETFs as collateral in repurchase agreements [7]. In a repo, securities serve as collateral against a cash loan. The outlet said the filing shows XRP ETF shares used as collateral, not necessarily a direct XRP investment by Schwab [7]. That case has its own page on XRP ETF shares as repo collateral.
Ripple’s planned bank is a trust company. On December 12, 2025 the OCC granted Ripple National Trust Bank preliminary conditional approval only [10]. The letter limits the bank to trust company operations and says it will not be an insured depository institution [10]. It describes planned services as managing the RLUSD reserve, collateral trustee work for RLUSD holders, and crypto custody [10]. The approval expires if capital is not raised within 12 months or the bank does not open within 18 months. Counted from December 12, 2025, those dates fall on December 12, 2026 and June 12, 2027 [10].
Derivatives rules moved earlier in 2026. On February 6, 2026, CFTC staff issued Letter 26-05, a no-action position for futures commission merchants that accept payment stablecoins and other non-securities digital assets as collateral in futures customer accounts [11]. One qualifying test is that the asset underlies a futures contract listed on a CFTC-registered exchange [11]. Among its conditions, the asset must be a payment stablecoin or the underlying commodity of a futures contract on a CFTC-registered exchange [11]. The letter states it represents the view of the staff division only [11]. The wider legal picture sits in what rules govern lending against XRP.
The same report noted that “The disclosure therefore does not establish that Schwab selected XRP ETFs for investment exposure.”[13]
Forkast reported on August 21, 2026 that a fund backed by Ripple, Clearpool and Cicada Partners lends RLUSD on the XRP Ledger, and that “XRP itself is relegated to a utility role, used exclusively for transaction fees and required minimum account balances rather than as a lent asset.”[16]
Is the XRP Ledger’s own lending feature live?
Yahoo Finance reported on October 1, 2026 that validator voting had opened on LendingProtocolV1_1, and that LendingProtocol and SingleAssetVault must also pass before lending can launch on mainnet. Activation needs a sustained supermajority for the full voting period [8]. A companion demo app walks through creating vaults, depositing, issuing uncollateralized fixed-term loans and repaying them [8].
Clearpool plans to build on it. Bitcoin.com News reported on September 11, 2026 that Clearpool’s XRP Ledger product would use these standards with loans in RLUSD, and that it has been testing on Devnet, where transactions carry no monetary value [9]. Both amendments remained subject to validator approval, and Clearpool described institutional lending on the ledger as largely undeveloped [9]. The status of the vote is tracked on whether native lending is live on the XRP Ledger.
Law firm Skadden summarizes the Basel standard as giving crypto assets that fail its hedging-recognition test “a risk weight of 1,250%,” and as providing that a bank’s “aggregate exposure to Group 2 cryptoassets should not exceed 1% of its Tier 1 capital” and is “subject to a strict 2% limit.”[17] The rules in the US and Canada are on what rules govern lending against XRP. ## How does XRP collateral use compare in size with bitcoin and ether collateral markets?
Eligibility can be compared; volume cannot. Coinbase International lists XRP alongside BTC and ETH as collateral, and kept all three when it trimmed its list in September 2026 [4]. Ripple Prime’s CEO Mike Higgins described Bitcoin, Ethereum, XRP and Solana in May as part of his ambition for tokenizing assets as collateral for margin and settlement, which crypto.news reported as the next step rather than a current arrangement [1]. No public source puts the amount of XRP pledged next to bitcoin or ether collateral totals.
What is the strongest case against reading this as real adoption?
crypto.news made it on July 8, 2026. Ripple Prime’s arrangement is “Ripple’s own brokerage accepting Ripple’s own asset,” and the outlet said “today it mostly runs in a circle” [1]. Inside Ripple’s own product stack, settlement runs predominantly on RLUSD, not XRP [1]. The report argued that collateral demand at scale needs firms other than Ripple to accept and hold XRP as margin, which requires legal certainty plus approval from risk committees that have their own preferred assets [1].
The same piece gives the other side its due. It says skeptics do not deny the infrastructure is real [1]. Bulls answer that RLUSD adoption seeds the ledger with liquidity XRP collateral could later use, a sequencing claim whose first half is observable and whose second half is not yet [1]. Bitnomial’s own release ties its XRP margin to its Ripple partnership [3].
What specific findings between now and 2028 would disprove the collateral thesis?
crypto.news listed checkable signals on July 8, 2026. The first is a brokerage or clearing venue Ripple does not own announcing it accepts XRP as margin collateral [1]. Another is Hidden Road’s post-trade activity showing up on the XRP Ledger, in ledger throughput and in Ripple’s quarterly disclosures [1]. The counter-signals it named include Ripple Prime growing while its ledger migration stays a press-release commitment [1]. It also said that if RLUSD keeps absorbing each new institutional product, the token’s role narrows [1].
Two more tests have fixed dates or clear outcomes. Validators might not sustain a supermajority for native lending, in which case mainnet does not change, CryptoDaily noted on July 23, 2026 [8]. The OCC approval for Ripple’s trust bank lapses if it does not open by June 12, 2027 [10]. The events so far are laid out in what happened in XRP lending and collateral during 2026, and the different forms of credit are sorted in what kinds of XRP credit exist today.
Bank capital rules still giving crypto assets that fail the hedging test a 1,250% risk weight, as Skadden summarizes the Basel standard.[17]
Coinbase’s help page says 29 other assets stop counting as eligible collateral from September 29, 2026; XRP is not among them, and its public asset list still showed XRP as active collateral that day.[4][18]

What we reason Analysis
- XRP is already pledged and margined in live venues, but every documented case sits inside Ripple’s own brokerage, comes from a firm that describes a Ripple partnership, or is a crypto exchange or crypto lender. That fits an asset that can be financed, not one that works as systemic collateral. This rests on crypto.news (July 2026), Bitnomial (November 2025), the Coinbase International help page and Nexo’s borrowing page.
- The first signal crypto.news named in July 2026, a venue Ripple does not own accepting XRP as margin, has partly appeared, since Bitnomial (November 2025) and Coinbase International (September 2026) list XRP. What their public pages do not show is how much XRP is actually posted.
- The OCC’s December 2025 letter describes RLUSD reserve management, collateral trustee services for RLUSD holders and crypto custody. Nothing in those described services is lending against XRP, so the trust bank approval does not by itself point to XRP-backed loans.
- The native ledger lending demo described by CryptoDaily (July 2026) issues uncollateralized loans, and Clearpool’s plan reported by Bitcoin.com News (September 2026) denominates loans in RLUSD. When native lending activates, its first credit may be RLUSD lending rather than borrowing against XRP.
- The Schwab repo report from CaptainAltcoin (September 2026) concerns ETF shares, which sit one step away from XRP itself, so it shows XRP exposure entering traditional collateral, not XRP being pledged directly.
What's still open
- As of October 1, 2026, no public disclosure gives the amount of XRP posted as collateral at Ripple Prime, Bitnomial, Coinbase International Exchange or Nexo.
- As of October 1, 2026, no public filing or announcement shows a bank making loans secured by XRP.
- Whether and when validators will activate the XRP Ledger’s SingleAssetVault and LendingProtocol amendments was still unsettled as of September 11, 2026.
- Whether Ripple National Trust Bank will open before its June 12, 2027 deadline is not known as of October 1, 2026.
- As of October 1, 2026, no public source compares the volume of XRP posted as collateral with bitcoin or ether collateral volumes.
In plain English
Some companies already let customers pledge XRP to back trades or borrow money, including Ripple’s own broker, a US futures exchange called Bitnomial, Coinbase’s international exchange and the lender Nexo. None of them has published how much XRP is pledged. The sources reviewed do not show an ordinary bank making loans secured by XRP. The XRP Ledger’s own lending feature has been written but was still waiting for approval from the network’s validators in September 2026.
